In Which I Make Goals … Not Resolutions
2This December has been probably one of the most chaotic and jam-packed ones I’ve had in quite a while. As it (and 2011) draws to a close, I find myself looking forward to January and a fresh start.
I’m not a big fan of resolutions. I’m not sure why … maybe it’s the stigma around people “dropping” them by February … or perhaps it’s the idea that they seem so nebulous and never-ending.
Instead I make goals. Small term (January) and long term (2012). To keep myself on track, I’ll share my writing goals with you!
For January:
- Write 6 days a week.
- Block my day so I can focus on concrete tasks.
For 2012:
- Complete and edit 2 manuscripts.
- Become agented.
- Read at least a dozen books outside of my genre.
Yes. I realize these sound like resolutions. But hopefully these are goals I will reach. What about you?
These are great! Simple, to the point and manageable. Goals are more like a to-do list to me whereas resolutions seem so final — no wiggle room, no adjustment. I actually have several of the same including the blocking out time for writing and editing my manuscripts (I don’t know if I’ll be ready for querying in 2012 but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!).
Good luck and happy 2012!
Yeah, I have been working on my business plan and trying to set achievable goals. I haven’t liked resolutions either. I think they tend to be arbitrary and usually come from a should or shouldn’t list that we carry in our heads. Goals are more heart and passion driven which I think gives them more power.
