Master Bathrooms and Kids

If you have a house that was built in the last 15 years, chances are you have a monster master bathroom. You probably have a shower and a bath, a walk-in closet, a separate toilet, and two sinks.

I understand the reasoning behind this. You probably have two adults sharing the bathroom and they need two sinks to spit in after brushing their teeth, and they may want some privacy once in a while.

But today it truly hit me that the monster master bathroom really isn’t about the adults. It’s about the kids. And I realized this because I was forced to take a shower in our tiny guest bathroom, as our shower is being redone due to mold issues. And I realized just how much of a hazard this bathroom is!

If you’re a parent, chances are that often times you have to take a shower while the kids are awake … and when those kids are young, you need to drag them into the bathroom to keep an eye on them. As a baby you can put them in the bouncy seat to prop them up while you take a quick dip. But as a toddler you have to block them off from everything, which makes a separate toilet a wonderful idea. Shut the door and voila, no toddler playing in the toilet. You can also use all that counter space to push toiletries and mirrors and necessities away from the edge for those sticky little fingers.

And what about that separate bath? It’s great for throwing the kids in for a bath. Who wants to be cramped in their little bathroom when their young, bent over a low bathtub with the toilet in your back?

Wow! The picture above looks alot like my monster bathroom. However, the people who built mine were not thinking of kids. Otherwise, they would have NEVER put carpeting throughout the entire room?!!!! There is not such thing as a dry carpet when the kids are the tub or potty training for that matter. yuck!

I’m always so envious of those homes you see on TV and in magazines which have bathrooms that’re the size of one of our bedrooms. I’m convinced that those kinds of bathrooms don’t exist for mere mortal beings like most of us. We just re-did our master bath here at the 2Dolphins Resort & Spa earlier this year but it is absolutely minuscule in comparison to most master baths.
